Grumpy Cat Comics Coming

This Fall

Dynamite announced a licensing partnership with Grumpy Cat Limited to bring the internet celebri-cat Grumpy Cat to print and digital comics.

The first comic adaptation, a three-issue miniseries starring Grumpy Cat and her brother Pokey, will release this fall. The miniseries will be collected into a hardcover graphic novel in time for holiday release. Dynamite also plans to launch a new website this summer featuring weekly Grmpy Cat comic strips.

Grumpy Cat, aka Tartar Sauce, started out her meme life on Reddit, where her adorable perma-scowl (which her owner says is the result of feline dwarfism) quickly spread to Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Her owner, Tabatha Bundesen, capitalized on the kitty’s success with two New York Times bestselling books, a Lifetime TV Christmas special, numerous TV and product spots, and merchandise that ranges from an iced coffee drink to a line of Ultra PRO game accessories. Her Facebook fans currently number over 7.6 million, and her YouTube video views have topped 31 million.

A look at the post Secret Wars marvel universe

Marvel Senior VP- Executive Editor Tom Brevoort confirmed that the Marvel Universe timeline will jump forward eight months after the events of Secret Wars concludes, and that several of the introduced characters and teams will carry over into the new MU.

“In the same way that events jumped forward in time eight months in Avengers and New Avengers during the lead-up to Secret Wars, so too when we enter the new Marvel Universe eight months will have passed for all of the characters as well,” Brevoort said.  “This provides our creators, even apart from Secret Wars, to drop into exciting new situations and status quos on the fly. So look for surprises and mysteries and changes galore as series resume in the New MU.”

The despotic future Hulk/Maestro, A-Force, and Shiklah’s Mrs. Deadpool & The Howling Commandos will all play roles in the future of the new MU, as well as the exotic locales from Weirdworld. More information will be revealed as additional Secret Wars titles are released.

In related or perhaps unrelated Marvel news, Brian Michael Bendis confirmed today on his tumblr that Uncanny X-men #600, which was set to release this month, has been pushed back to October.  “It was bumped until after Secret Wars for editorial and commercial reason,” he said.  “It will not affect the story or the impact of the story.  In fact it may have more impact on how things shake out after my run.”  Both Diamond and Marvel now list the book’s release date as October 7.

3 new titles announced from Seven Seas

Seven Seas Entertainment has announced the acquisition of Tsukasa Saimura’s manga series Hour of the Zombie, along with two other series that will debut in 2016, The Testament of Sister New Devil and My Monster Secret.  These three new titles join another trio of titles due in 2016 that Seven Seas announced recently

Japanese Cover to ‘Hour of the Zombie’ #2

Hour of the Zombie, which will be released in individual volumes with color inserts starting with Vol. 1 (MSRP $12.99) in April of 2016, takes place in an ordinary high school, which is suddenly beset with a zombie epidemic among its students.  When the plague suddenly subsides and the school returns to a near normal state, suspicions run high, especially in regards to those students who have “turned.”  This seinen series, which is known as Igai—The Play Dead/Alive in Japan where the now 2-volume series is still ongoing, should appeal to fans of High School of the Dead and The Walking Dead.

‘The Testament of Sister New Devil’

Debuting from Seven Seas in January of 2016 is The Testament of Sister New Devil, a fan service-filled shonen manga series by Tetsuto Uesu that debuted in Japan in 2013.  The manga is based on a series of action-packed fantasy light novels that were also written by Uesu, and which have inspired an anime series that began airing in January and is being simulcast on Crunchyroll.

‘My Monster Secret’ Japanese Cover

The third new Seven Seas title is My Monster Secret, the first volume in another supernatural manga action comedy series that has reached 11 volumes in Japan where it is known as Jitsu wa Watashi wa.  Written and drawn by Eiji Masuda, My Monster Secret has all the trappings of a shonen supernatural high school saga including aliens, demons, vampires, werewolves, and girlfriends with serious issues.  The first volume of My Monster Secret, which will be released in normal size volumes, is due out in January.

3 New Manga from Seven Seas this year

Seven Seas Entertainment has announced three new manga series, the slice of life romantic series Orange by Ichigo Takano, the gender-bending virtual world saga Not Lives by Wataru Karasuma, and the “monster girl” manga Franken Fran by Katsuhisu Kigitsu.  Orange and Franken Fran will be released in double-sized omnibus editions with color inserts and a cover price of $19.99, while Not Lives will be released in single volumes (with color inserts) for $12.99 each.

Orange will be the first of the new series to appear with the first double-size volume set for release in January of 2016.  This romantic time-travel slice of life saga stars when its 16-year-old female protagonist receives a letter from her 27-year-old-self, which appears to offer a chance for a “do-over. This manga, the first volume of which sold over 1.5 million copies in Japan, was published online by Crunchyroll.

Franken Fran

Next up in February of 2016 is Franken Fran, a heavily-requested “girl monster” series that takes place in rural Japan where a surgeon with Frankenstein-like skills has created a daughter.  When he goes missing, it’s the daughter (Franken Fran) who takes over the surgery and proves to be a surprisingly effective and compassionate doctor.

Not Lives

The third series Not Lives will debut in March of 2016.  Not Lives follows the adventures of a hapless teenage boy who is totally obsessed with video games.  When he starts to play a strange game that appears among his own research material, he is mysteriously thrust into the game’s virtual world and changed into his female avatar in a gender-bending twist on the “imprisoned in a virtual world” genre.
